DPO support offered to mark Volunteers Week

Published: 2 June 2023

The ODPA embraces Volunteers Week (1-7 June) and this year is encouraging companies to lend their Data Protection Officers (DPOs) to local charities and third-sector organisations to help them fulfil their legal obligations as well improve safeguarding of people’s personal information. It’s a great way to boost Corporate Social Responsibility – and support charities helping our community thrive.
As part of its ongoing partnership with the Association for Guernsey Charities, the ODPA is offering to run an awareness session for DPOs supporting charities. The ODPA is also offering one-to-one meetings to volunteers, outside of its usual fortnightly drop-in sessions, in recognition of the fact that volunteering opportunities may not always fit in with existing support mechanisms.

Any DPOs looking to access these offers of support should contact communications@odpa.gg to express their interest.

Spotlight on a volunteer: Matthew Parker
Volunteers’ Week takes place every year during the first week of June and is a chance to celebrate the contribution people make to their communities by donating their time and energy to help others. The Office of the Data Protection Authority wanted to mark the occasion by sharing this podcast featuring Matthew Parker who, for the past 11 years, has dedicated hundreds of hours of his free time to educating the Bailiwick's young people about online safety and data protection.

Matthew was recently awarded one of the Islands Data Governance Forum inaugural Bijou Awards for his dedication and commitment to engaging and safeguarding young people. He discusses his motivation and how the digital landscape has changed over the years. Matthew Parker - Bijou Award Winner by Data Protection TeaBreak
