ODPA Commissioner to debut “Keeping children safe online” workshop in Alderney

Published: 10 October 2025

The Office of the Data Protection Authority will be in Alderney next week, continuing its dedicated outreach programme across the Bailiwick.

Commissioner Brent Homan will be holding the first of a new series of workshops for parents and carers focused on online safety for children.

In this interactive session, Commissioner Homan will encourage open dialogue on a challenge faced by all parents, focusing specifically on:
  • Common online risks and how to spot them
  • Practical tips for setting boundaries and using parental controls
  • How to talk to your child about digital safety
This workshop is designed to empower parents and carers with the tools and knowledge to help children navigate the online world safely and confidently.

These sessions will be offered to all parents and carers of school age children in the Bailiwick in the next few months.

“In today’s digital world, understanding how to protect your child online is more crucial than ever. It is a challenge faced by all parents,” said Commissioner Homan.
"We will look at highly popular Apps and provide simple, effective steps you can take today to help your child stay safe without cutting them off from their digital world.”

The session will take place on Friday 17 October at 2:15pm at St Anne’s School.

Organisations, charities and members of the public are also invited to a free, drop-in session at the Georgian House from 4-7pm the same day. Members of the ODPA will be on hand to offer support and advice to help businesses meet their obligations under the law, provide guidance on registering with the ODPA and support individuals in understanding and exercising their data rights.
