Privacy Symposium Conference 2024

Date:
Wednesday 12 June 2024
Time:
16:30 - 17:30
Location:
Venice, Italy
Our Commissioner, Brent Homan, was invited to Chair a session on data scraping at this year's Privacy Symposium Conference

This session will cover data scraping, its implications, and its role in today’s data-driven landscape. Data scraping, which is defined as the automated extraction of data from websites, APIs, and other online sources, has emerged as a common practice for data gathering across various industries, which raises many questions such as consent for secondary use of data. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from the perspective of several authorities that have agreed on common principles to address data scraping.

Key questions and objectives
  • What are the ethical, legal, and technical considerations surrounding data scraping, particularly in terms of consent, privacy, and a fair use of publicly available data?
  • What strategies can be employed to reduce legal risks while using the benefits of data scraping for research, analysis, and development?
Panel:
  • Mr Brent Homan - Chair (Office of the Data Protection Authority - Guernsey)
  • Mr Tobias Judin - Keynote speaker (Norwegian Data Protection Authority)
  • Ms Catherine Lennman - Keynote speaker (Swiss Data Protection Authority)
  • Ms Claudia Berg - Keynote speaker (UK Information Commissioner's Office)
