Press Release:

Emma Martins to speak at European seminar

Published: 26 November 2021

The Bailiwick’s Data Protection Commissioner, Emma Martins, has been invited to participate in an international data protection conference in December.

The Privacy, InfoSec, Culture Change & Awareness Societal Organisation event (otherwise known as ‘Piccaso’), will take place in London on 9 December and brings together a stellar panel including representatives from The London Stock Exchange, HSBC, Privacy Culture Limited and Mrs Martins, which will explore why a culture of privacy is so important and how to embed this into organisations. Attended by data protection professionals from across Europe, the aim of the seminar is to help privacy leaders learn, avoid the pitfalls of past mistakes and share the best practices in data protection and governance.

Mrs Martins considers that her attendance at Piccaso shows how, despite being a small jurisdiction, the Bailiwick’s approach to data protection legislation is of interest internationally.

‘I am delighted to be able to represent the Bailiwick alongside some of the UK’s major organisations. Our presence illustrates just how far we have come as a jurisdiction in providing effective data protection regulation – independently from government – and ensuring high standards of compliance together with a culture of privacy within our community.’

The Bailiwick’s Data Protection Commissioner will contribute to a panel on the important role played by the Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA), highlighting how a forward-looking, cooperative and thoughtful approach to compliance within the island’s regulated community is beneficial for organisations, individuals and society as a whole.

Mrs Martins added,

‘Small jurisdictions like ours are able to contribute meaningfully and positively in this area and I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to talk of our approach with such a wide community of data professionals.’

The event takes place at Denton LLP’s offices in the City of London on 9 December, more details can be found at piccaso.org
