One cold, wet, dark January night, Commissioner Brent Homan swapped his bed for a sleeping bag in a soggy field as he joined dozens of other islanders taking part in the Big Skipton International Sleep Out, The event was held to support Guernsey charity Caritas, with all proceeds going towards building modular homes to tackle homelessness in the Bailiwick.
A 2023 States of Guernsey Indicators of Poverty report found that over 1,000 islanders are currently without secure housing, though the lack of clear definition for the term ‘homeless’ means this number could be much higher.
"With homelessness becoming ever-more prevalent in Guernsey, it was a privilege to represent the ODPA at the sleep out to raise awareness and funds towards modular homes for the homeless," said Commissioner Homan (pictured with Reverend Daniel Foot and Stefan Botha)
At the ODPA an important part of serving the public is supporting the community and its most vulnerable
