Our outgoing Commissioner's reflections on reading

In her final post as Commissioner, Emma Martins has the following to say about the power and purpose of books in her life.

“Books are knowledge. Books are reflection. Books change your mind.” Toni Morrison

"Reading is, for me, a hugely enjoyable as well as valuable way to spend time, even if it's just a few minutes a day. Consider the time it has taken an author to write the words.

I think that should serve as a reminder for us to slow down and properly take in those words. It is not a race to the end, it is a journey to savour.

Reading in my professional life gives me more than enjoyment:
  • It is a way of staying curious (the world of data is complex and ever-changing, we do not have all the answers because no one does – never stop being curious)
  • It is a way of accessing some of the best minds working in this area (what a privilege it is to sit reading the brilliant words of brilliant people – it is the next best thing to meeting them)
  • It is a way of trying to absorb some of the knowledge of others who I respect and admire (learning in this field should never stop, if it does, it’s probably time to look for a new job!)
So, for me, these books represent all of these things, and more.

Curiosity, listening and learning need to be non-negotiable for those of us working in data and its protection.

Books are one way to do more, and be more, of those things. There are others.

I simply encourage you to find ways that work for you."
