Understanding Privacy by Daniel J Solove

Daniel J Solove is a professor of law at the George Washington University Law School. He is well known for his writing and teaching on privacy matters and has written a number of books.

In this book, Solove gives a comprehensive overview of the difficulties involved in discussions of privacy.

Rather than accepting that because defining privacy is difficult this means we don’t try, he argues that because no single definition can be workable we need to better understand cultural differences and historical changes in views of privacy.

Solove writes in a beautifully clear and accessible way, setting out a framework for understanding privacy that provides practical guidance for engaging with the complex issues at the heart of the book. He talks of that fact that he wants (the book) to be “the beginning of what I hope will be a more comprehensive and clear understanding of privacy”.
