Location:

Bailiwick of Guernsey Data Protection Commissioner Brent Homan will be speaking about 'Children's Rights and the Metaverse' at this Data Protection Day conference organised by the Islands Data Governance Forum.

Billions of dollars have been invested into immersive metaverse technologies, where people live/work/play in virtual or augmented online worlds. There are some 400 million monthly users worldwide, a figure that is expected to quadruple by 2030.

Of those 400 million users, 80% are under 16 with just over half being under 13 years old. From Minecraft to Epic Games to Meta’s metaverse, there are a number of operators in the industry, with the most popular platform today being Roblox.

In this talk about Children and the Metaverse, Bailiwick Data Protection Commissioner Brent Homan explores the opportunities and challenges of immersive online platforms. He delves into the risks for children on the metaverse,  privacy safeguard expectations and how regulatory cooperation can play a key role in developing a safe and privacy-protective metaverse
