Guernsey and Gibraltar data protection regulators pledge closer co-operation

The Bailiwick’s Data Protection Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. 

This establishes a framework to make it easier for the two regulators to co-operate and share information as they each fulfil their statutory obligations to protect the personal data of their respective communities.

It is important because it recognises the increase in circulation and exchange of personal data across borders, the increasing complexity of information technologies and the resulting need for increased cross-border communication and enforcement activities. 

Bailiwick of Guernsey Data Protection Commissioner Emma Martins commented: 

“I am very pleased to sign this agreement on behalf of the Authority. It serves to cement an already strong relationship with The Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. Smaller jurisdictions like ours have much in common and we can learn from, and support, each other as we continue to strive for the highest standards of data protection for our communities.”

Gibraltar Information Commissioner John Paul Rodriguez commented: 

“Globalisation and technological innovation are increasingly allowing personal data to be shared more widely, with greater ease, and in larger volumes. Whilst this presents challenges, it does not come without its opportunities. Sharing our experiences as regulators, and leveraging off each other’s knowledge, will allow us to be more efficient, adaptable and resilient in fulfilling our functions and ultimately in protecting the rights of individuals when it comes to their personal data.”
